Indian gangster Sanjeev Jeeva shot dead in Lucknow court

Sanjeev Meshwari Jeeva, the gangster aide of politician Mukhtar Ansari, was shot dead during a court hearing in Lucknow on Wednesday (June 7).

The shooting also left a six-year-old girl and a police officer injured. Jeeva was appearing in court in relation to a criminal case lodged against him.

“Sanjeev Maheshwari Jeeva, who was held in Lucknow jail, was brought to the court for hearing in a case and was shot dead by an unknown assailant,” said Lucknow Police Commissioner S.B. Shiradkar.

Unknown assailants reportedly opened fire in the courtroom. Witnesses said the shooters were dressed as lawyers. Police have arrested one of the assailants identified as Vijay Yadav.

Jeeva was accused of assassinating former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi in 1997.

The attack inside the courtroom has raised questions about the security measures in Indian courts and criminal trials. ICA/Expat Media
