With a population of 1.4 billion, India will surpass China this year to become the world’s most populous nation.
India is anticipated to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation, despite its population growth slowing down, according to the United Nations (UN).
Official figures released on Tuesday revealed that China’s population dropped in 2017 for the first time in more than 60 years as the birth rate decreased in the face of increasing financial strain and evolving societal norms.
China’s population last decreased in the early 1960s, when it was experiencing the worst famine in modern times due to the disastrous Great Leap Forward agricultural policy of Mao Zedong.
China ended its strict one-child policy — imposed in the 1980s owing to fears of overpopulation — in 2016 and began allowing couples to have three children in 2021. BKM/ Expat Media
