House for sale with free wife goes viral again

No, it’s not a typo. A newspaper story about a house for sale with “free wife” in Indonesia has gone viral again, with netizens expressing shock over the unusual offer.

The story, which was published in 2015, received renewed notoriety after netizens shared a photo of the newspaper clipping.

The story follows an online property listing for a two-bedroom house, with a “rare offer” to the buyer that says “you can ask the owner to marry you”.

The ad featured a photo of Wina Lia, a widowed mother of two and beauty salon owner, and owner of the property in Indonesia’s island of Java.

According to the ad, the offer is “for serious buyers and non-negotiable”. The house was on offer for 999 million rupiah ($75,000).

Speaking to media, Lia said that after the property listing went viral, she was approached my many journalists, and even the police wanted to talk to her.

Lia said police wanted to “verify the news”. “They consider it as an improper advertisement. But I explained to them that it was not my idea,” she said.

Lia said she had asked a friend who was a property agent to help her sell her home, and also find a husband, but that she did not expect that her friend would publish an ad online that combined both offers. ICA/Expat Media
