LOS ANGELES – Glee star Naya Rivera’s son, 4, said his mother helped him get back onto the deck of their rented boat before she disappeared underwater.
“She must have mustered enough energy to get her son back on the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said at a news conference.
Rivera’s body was found floating in Lake Piru, southern California, on Monday. Her son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, was found asleep and alone on the drifting boat.
The boat vendor had searched for the mother and son after they failed to return on time after the July 8 incident. He found the boat drifting with the boy onboard.
It took authorities another five days to find Rivera’s body.
Sheriff Ayub said that Rivera was not wearing a life vest and is believed to have drowned accidentally in the lake.
“It has been an extremely difficult time for her family throughout this ordeal,” Ayub said “We share in their grief.”
The body was flown by helicopter to the coroner’s office in Ventura where an autopsy could be conducted.
Rivera, 33, played singing cheerleader Santana Lopez in the musical-comedy Glee.
Her son with actor Ryan Dorsey, was safe and healthy and reunited with family members, authorities said. DAJ/Expat Media
