Online dating gone wrong: Filipina ‘love scammer’ arrested for duping man of P250,000

Philippine police arrested a female Facebook “love scammer” who made her victim fall in love with her before scamming him of P250,000 (Dh15,613), police said on Tuesday (October 25).

Warlyn Tan Castro, 58, was arrested in an entrapment operation in Pangasinan on October 21 as she tried to claim the money from a remittance center.

Philippine National Police’s Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) Chief Brigadier General Joel Doria said Castro has a standing arrest warrant issued by a Baguio court.

“As more and more people are engaging in online dating, ACG reminds you to be very careful and look for signs of red flags. When your virtual girlfriend/boyfriend suddenly asks for money, think again. You might be a victim of a romance scam,” Doria said.

The police official said Castro targeted victims on Facebook and posed as a member of the US Army. Her victim reported her to police after he gave her P250,000 for a fake package.

Police did not give further details about the identity and nationality of the victim, but said that he was made to believe they were seriously dating online.

Castro told the victim in May that she was sending him a package with a huge amount of money that they can use to start a business in the Philippines. She told the victim to keep the money.

However, she told him that the package was intercepted upon arrival as it purportedly contained a huge amount of money. She asked the victim to pay P250,000 to release the package.

The victim was able to send P65,000 to the suspect. He also borrowed money from his cousin to complete the required payment. His cousin told him it was part of a scam.

This prompted him to report the incident to the police, which eventually led to the suspect’s arrest after an entrapment operation.

The suspect is now in custody and charged with swindling. ICA/Expat Media
