ENGLAND – An expat family in the UK is raffling off their house for just £5 (Dh25).
The lucky winner of the raffle on the Raffall website will own the three-bedroom house in Chesterfield, England and also £15,000. The home has recently been given a modern makeover and is also completely mortgage-free.
Speaking to Expatmedia.net, Sreekanth Balachandran said he got the idea of raffling off his house after watching something similar on TV.
Sreekanth is one of a growing number of people trying to sell their homes through raffle draws where sellers hope they can cover the sale price with low-cost tickets.
“I also liked the idea of giving people the opportunity to own a mortgage-free house in the UK for just £5,” Sreekanth told Expatmedia.net.
He hopes it will give expats in the UAE the chance to own a dream home in the UK. Those who wish to participate in the draw can go to the Raffall website. The raffle ends on December 25 and only 60,000 tickets are available.
Sreekanth said he has been trying to sell the home since June so that he and his family can buy a home in Staveley town where his daughter will attend a nursery.
There have been multiple viewings and prospective buyers showing interest in their UK home, but the sale process during the pandemic has left him somewhat discouraged.
Sreekanth has lived in the Derbyshire home with his wife, Surya, 28, and their daughter, Malavika, 2, in the last five years.
“The house is in a good neighbourhood and we did spend a lot to make it modern. The only sad thing about parting with it is missing our neighbours, who are like family to us,” he said.
His favourite part of the house? “My daughter’s room due to the simple reason it is my daughter’s room,” he said. The couple’s daughter was born in the home. Sreekanth also loves his “converted office in the garage, which is like my man cave”.
He is hoping to use the proceeds from the raffle to buy a house closer to his daughter’s school.
The family is also throwing in £15,000 spending money to the winner and a £10,000 consolation prize. They will also donate £5,000 to Chesterfield homelessness charity, Pathways, if all 60,000 tickets are sold. DAJ/Expat Media
