Ex-NBA champ Dwight Howard to play in Dubai basketball championship

Dubai International Basketball Championship to kick off on January 19

Former NBA champion and eight-time All-Star Dwight Howard will play for the Philippine team Strong Group Athletics in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, which kicks off on Friday (January 19).

The championship will run until January 28 at the Al Nasr Sports Club in Dubai. The tournament will parade top seeded teams from different clubs in the Middle East, according to organizer Sama Events Management. Tickets are available on Platinumlist.

The 10-day sports event will be participated by the UAE National Team, Al Nasr Club of the UAE, and teams from Philippines, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Syria.

Howard, most notable for his time with the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic, signed up with Strong Group earlier this month to play in the Dubai tournament. Under Strong Group, he will be joined by former Oklahoma City Thunder guard Andre Roberson, former Gilas Pilipinas player Andray Blatche and former Dallas Mavericks player Mckenzie Moor.

Also suiting up for Strong Group are Jordan Heading, Justine Baltazar, Kevin Quiambao, JD Cagulangan, Ef Escandor, Allen Liwag, Tony Ynot and Justine Sanchez, backed by head coach Charles Tiu, assistant coach Topex Robinson, consultant Brian Goorjian, and manager Jacob Lao.
