MANILA – Metro Manila will be placed under general community quarantine from June 1 to 15, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Thursday (May 28).
Duterte said Albay, Davao City, Regions 2, 3 and 4, National Capital Region (NCR) and Pangasinan would also be placed under general community quarantine “until we have reviewed the general situation.”
Under general community quarantine, there will be no restriction in public movement, although public gatherings will remain prohibited and mass transport will be allowed to run on limited capacity. Those under the age of 21 or 60 years and older will not be allowed to go out.
“We are not happy to put you in this place but after review maybe we can,” Duterte said in his public address aired over state-run PTV4.
He said the rest of the Philippines will come under a modified general community quarantine “depending of viability of the place to meet the challenges of Covid”.
Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque debunked rumors that a nationwide quarantine will be imposed starting on June 1.
Reports have circulated on social media that a modified general community quarantine would allegedly be imposed across the Philippines.
Under the modified general community quarantine, there will be no restrictions on public movement, however everyone will be required to wear a mask, practice physical distancing and observe health protocols.
“I refuse to authenticate because that was not released by my office,” Roque said, urging the public to wait for the official presidential announcement.
He also reminded the public to observe strict physical distancing and proper hygiene to protect themselves against coronavirus.
