A tip-off from a member of the public has helped Dubai Police uncover and arrest a 22-member gang accused of organised begging on some of the emirate’s busiest roads.
The case began with a report filed through the Police Eye service on the Dubai Police app about people approaching motorists and asking for money, claiming they were stranded and needed cash to pay for travel.
Officers identified one suspect and monitored his movements, eventually discovering that the incident was part of a wider organised operation.
Investigators found the group operating at several locations, including Al Khor Street, Ras Al Khor, the area around Bu Kadra Bridge and the Dubai-Al Ain Road bridge.
Following surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations, Dubai Police prepared a security plan that resulted in the arrest of all 22 suspects.
Police highlighted the role played by the public report in helping investigators identify the group, urging residents to continue reporting suspected illegal activity through official channels.
The force also warned that begging on major roads creates a safety risk beyond the legal violation. Approaching moving vehicles or stopping on busy roads and bridges can put both the people asking for money and other road users in danger.
Begging is illegal in the UAE. Under the Federal Law, people caught begging can face a Dh5,000 fine and up to three months in prison. Those operating professional begging gangs or recruiting people from outside the UAE to beg face at least six months in prison and a minimum Dh100,000 fine.
