Morocco victory over Portugal in World Cup sparks Dubai street celebrations

Morocco’s historic victory over Portugal in the World Cup sparked street celebrations in Dubai on Saturday evening (December 10).

Fans poured outside the Al Safadi restaurant along Al Rigga Street to celebrate after Morocco’s Atlas Lions made World Cup history by becoming the first African team to advance to the semi-finals.

Crowds could be seen dancing, clapping and singing, while Dubai Police patrols were on standby. The victory was also shared by Arab fans as they joined in on the street celebrations; cheering as they waved their own flags.

There were similar celebrations across the region, with Morocco’s victory seen as symbolic for the African continent and the Arab world.

Morocco’s progression in the World Cup marks the first time that an African or Arab country has ever reached the final four in 92 years of World Cup history.

Youssef En-Nesyri was the injury-hit Atlas Lions’ hero, scoring a spectacular first-half header to extend the team’s fairytale run in Qatar. JY/Expat Media
