British couple stole Dh1.16 million from gym lockers to spend on Dubai vacations

A UK court has convicted a British couple who went on a year-long stealing spree of gym lockers to bag a total of £250,000 (Dh1.16 million) that they spent on vacations in Dubai, Paris and other places.

The Croydon Crown Court sentenced Ashley Singh, 39, and Sophie Bruyea, 20, to jail for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. Singh was sentenced to three years in jail, while Bruyea was handed a 20-month jail sentence suspended for two years.

According to reports, the couple stole money from gym lockers across London and southeast England and targeted unsuspecting victims while they were exercising.

The couple stole bank cards that they used to buy expensive gadgets, designer clothing and luxury bags that were later sold for cash. They used the money to fund their lavish vacations abroad, which they also flaunted on social media. Photos on Facebook showed them driving luxury cars and posing in the Burj Al Arab and the Aura Skypool in Palm Jumeirah.

Eighteen victims filed fraud reports against the couple. The duo was arrested at Gatwick Airport last year on their return from Paris where they bought £1,700 worth of designer goods. ICA/Expat Media
