For some employees, taking time off work after a relationship ends could be as important as taking leave for other major personal events.

That is the idea behind a policy introduced by Bengaluru-based fintech company StockGro, which allows employees to take up to seven days of break-up leave after the end of a significant relationship.

The policy, introduced in April 2024, covers situations including break-ups and divorce. Employees do not have to provide proof of the relationship ending or answer questions before taking the leave, according to reports on the company’s policy.

Employees who require additional time can discuss an extension with management, according to reports.
StockGro founder and CEO Ajay Lakhotia said the company considers its employees part of a family and wanted to support them during difficult periods in their personal lives.

“We see our team as a family, and in times of personal turmoil, we want to be there for them. This Break-Up Leave is our way of saying, ‘We understand, and it’s okay to take a moment for yourself,’” Lakhotia said.

The policy does not require employees to substantiate their reason for taking the leave, placing the arrangement on trust between staff and management.

Break-up leave remains an unusual workplace benefit, with most formal leave categories traditionally covering circumstances such as illness, family responsibilities and bereavement. StockGro’s policy instead specifically recognises the period following the end of a relationship as a reason for an employee to take time away from work.
