MANILA – The number of Filipinos who tested positive for the new coronavirus or Covid-19 aboard a quarantined cruise ship has climbed to 59, a health official announced on Monday (February 24).
“To date, 59 out of the 538 overseas Filipinos from the cruise ship have been confirmed with Covid-19, ” said Department of Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.
Two confirmed cases have already recovered, Vergeire said. The Philippine government said it will repatriate the 497 healthy Filipinos aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan.
The group is set to return to the Philippines on Tuesday (February 25). Those who show symptoms of coronavirus will be transferred to the hospital, while those who don’t show noticeable symptoms will be transferred to a quarantine facility in New Clark City.
Around the world, four other Filipinos have been infected with Covid-19, including two in the UAE, and one each in Hong Kong and Singapore.
In the UAE, the Philippine Embassy said it is working with officials to monitor the condition of two Filipinos who tested positive for the virus. ICA/Expat Media
