DUBAI – A 44-year-old Filipina has just been hailed as the UAE’s Best Nanny this year and she’s taking home a million peso retirement fund.
Melanie Manansala won the title on Saturday, besting more than 500 nominees in the UAE.
Manansala won for “being open, honest, balanced, committed and knowledgeable”.
The Filipina worked as a tailor in Pampanga, Philippines before heading to the UAE in 1993 and working as a nanny for a Lebanese family for 12 years before working with another family.
After receiving the prize, Manansala said she plans to open a supermarket in the Philippines after she retires.
She said having savings is crucial, particularly for rainy days.
“I realised that if I don’t have anything and if I don’t save anything, nobody will help me. So now, whenever I see new nannies I always teach them how to save. Even Dh100 tucked away each month [will do],” she said.
Apart from winning one million pesos, Manansala also won a ticket to the Philippines from Air Arabia, a bank account, and child care courses from Rise, which organised the award. DAJ/Expat Media
