LONDON – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was taken into police custody on Thursday (April 11) after nearly seven years of taking refuge at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Assange was arrested by officers at the embassy. He was wanted by British police for skipping bail in August 2012 and is also under investigation for sexual assault and rape in Sweden.
Ecuador gave Assange asylum in 2012 but the Metropolitan Police said that the Ecuadorian government had withdrawn asylum and that officers were “invited into the embassy by the ambassador.”
The US Justice Department has filed criminal charges against Assange, 47, over the publication of classified documents.
Assange, founder of the group that published thousands of sensitive government files, believes he will eventually be extradited to the US to face charges. GAD/Expat Media
