UAE weather: Rain in Dubai, sandstorm in Abu Dhabi

DUBAI – Unsettled weather continued in the UAE on Sunday, with sandstorms reported in Abu Dhabi in the morning and rain in parts of Dubai in the afternoon.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued a weather alert for strong winds stirring up dust and sand to lower visibility until 6pm in parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

On Sunday afternoon, rain of varying intensities fell on Downtown Dubai, Jebel Ali and other parts of Dubai.

It comes more than two weeks after heavy rain lashed the UAE, causing massive flooding that forced schools to close, disrupted traffic and killed at least one person in Ras Al Khaimah.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Infrastructure Development has pledged an investment of Dh500 million for projects to reduce the impact of extreme weather.

Minister Abdullah Al Nuaimi told the Federal National Council that dams and flyovers would be built after “we have learned a new lesson after the last rains”.

Al Nuaimi said the rainfall earlier this month was unlike any he has seen in his career. ICA/Expat Media
