Avoid these roads on Pope Francis’ UAE visit

DUBAI – If you are in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (February 5), watch out for several road closures ahead of Pope Francis’ mass in the capital.

The Department of Transport (DOT) announced on Sunday that roads around Zayed Sports City will be closed ahead of the papal mass that is expected to start at 10:30am on Tuesday.

According to the DOT, the Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street and Saif Ghobash Street will be closed in both directions from 12am to 6pm on Tuesday.

Trucks will also be banned from Abu Dhabi island from 6pm on Monday to 6pm on Tuesday.

The pope will be celebrating mass for an estimated 135,000 people at Zayed Sports City Stadium on Tuesday.

The pontiff arrived in the UAE on Sunday for a three-day visit as the UAE marks 2019 as the Year of Tolerance. He is the first pontiff to visit the Gulf.

Thousands of people are expected to converge in Abu Dhabi for the papal mass, with some 1,000 buses to be deployed to transport attendees from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

To help ease traffic and allow families to attend the papal mass, schools in the UAE will also be closed on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Human Resources. GAD/Expat Media
