DUBAI – An Afghan man who smuggled illegal drugs into the UAE and avoided detection at the airport was arrested the next day after his “weird walk” gave him away in Bur Dubai.
At the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday (August 19), the Afghan was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined Dh50,000 for smuggling 17 methamphetamine tablets that he had swallowed.
According to police, the drugs were placed in a bag that the drug mule swallowed with yogurt. Records showed that the 27-year-old had passed through Dubai International Airport on March 22, evading customs officers.
However, he was caught a few days later after a security guard at a building in Bur Dubai reported him to the police for “walking in a weird way”. The building security guard said that the Afghan man appeared afraid to let his feet touch the ground.
A CID officer who noticed the man’s neurotic behaviour took him to the Bur Dubai Police Station where officers noticed that the Afghan man was incoherent and restless.
“He kept asking for water and wouldn’t sit straight. When we asked him why, he admitted he swallowed drugs,” a police officer testified.
The Afghan told police that he was told to regurgitate the tablets and deliver them to a man in Dubai. He was allegedly paid $1,500 (Dh5,500) to deliver the drugs.
He will be deported after serving his jail term. ICA/Expat Media
