DUBAI – Members of the Philippine national football team Azkals have arrived in the UAE for their debut in the AFC Asian Cup.
At their press conference in Dubai on Saturday (January 5), team captain Phil Younghusband urged Filipinos in Dubai to watch their games.
“Having good attendance by most Filipinos will give us added boost and confidence and spur us on to do our best,” Younghusband said.
The 23-man squad start off their campaign against South Korea in Dubai’s Al Maktoum Stadium on Monday. The Azkals will also take on continental heavyweights China and Kyrgyzstan in the group stage of the 24-nation tournament.
Philippine coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said he is confident with the team’s efforts.
“We will be prepared… fight and try to fight a good game,” he said.
After the game with South Korea on January 7, the Philippine team will take on China on January 11 and Kyrgyzstan on January 16.
