MANILA – Passengers and personnel of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 were greeted with a surprise inspection from the Philippine president on Monday (June 10).
Rodrigo Duterte headed to the airport at 2am after hearing about flight cancellations and delays that affected hundreds of people.
The firebrand leader inspected the premises for about 30 minutes, and also apologised to passengers affected by flight cancellations and delays.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte visited NAIA Terminal 2 after coming from the wake of Sendeng Loo Gaisano in Makati City.
“The President apologizes for the inconvenience to the public because of the delays,” Panelo said in a Palace briefing.
Panelo added that Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Ed Monreal also assured Duterte that his agency is addressing the problem.
Duterte has reportedly ordered the Department of Transportation to look into a long-term solution for the problem and come up with a solution within a month.
Asked if Duterte’s surprise inspection would prompt him to dismiss any airport official, Panelo said Duterte has yet to announce any intention of firing any officials. ICA/Expat Media
