MANILA – An Indian man who claimed he was married to a Filipina but later turned out to be staying illegally in the Philippines with his Indian partner has been arrested and is set to be deported, according to the Bureau of Immigration.
The man, identified as Kuldeep Singh, 42, was arrested in his home in Caloocan City along with his Indian partner, Manjeet Kaur, 49. The couple is in detention while undergoing deportation proceedings.
“Our office received complaints alleging that the couple was engaged in usurious lending activities that prey on small Filipino traders and other residents of the city,” said BI Acting Intelligence chief Fortunato Manahan Jr.
Singh has been charged with misrepresentation after he claimed that he was married to a Filipina when he applied for resident visa. Kaur will be deported for illegal entry to the Philippines.
“We suspect that the spouse named in his marriage certificate is fictitious as he could not pinpoint her whereabouts. Instead, we discovered that he was living with an Indian woman who turned out to be undocumented as she failed to show any document proving she is legally staying in the country,” Manahan said.
