3-month UAE’s amnesty for visa rule violators starts

DUBAI – A three-month amnesty period for overstayers and violators of the UAE’s residency laws starts today.

The amnesty follows a UAE Cabinet decision in June allowing people who overstay their visa to voluntarily leave the UAE without a “no entry” passport stamp that is valid for two years.

Applicants must present a valid return ticket in order to avail of the reprieve effective August 1, 2018 to October 31, 2018.

Individuals who entered the UAE illegally will also be given the chance to leave voluntarily with a “no entry” stamp for two years given that they provide a valid return ticket.

Violators will be given the option to rectify their legal status by paying nominal fees or leave the UAE voluntarily without prosecution or payment of fines, said

Brigadier Saeed Rakan Al Rashedi, Acting Director General of Foreigners Affairs and Ports Department at the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship.

The last visa amnesty given in the UAE was in 2013, when nearly 62,000 illegal residents applied for amnesty within the two-month period.

The new legislative package approved in June included a review of the current residency system in the UAE.

The Cabinet approved a two-year extension of the residency period for fresh college graduates under their parents visa to allow them more time to hunt for jobs.

The Cabinet also approved an entry fee exemption for all transit passengers who want to enter the UAE within the first 48 hours of their arrival. The transit visa, which is available at airports, can be extended for up to 96 hours for a fee of only Dh50.

The Cabinet also approved a new 6-month visa for job seekers who overstayed their visa but wish to work in the country. GAD/Expat Media
