DUBAI – This year’s anticipated celebration of Sinulog in the UAE has been moved to a new venue and date, organisers said.
Sinulog is one of the Philippines’ most popular festivals and is celebrated in the city of Cebu every third Sunday of January to honor the child Jesus known as Santo Nino. Every year, more than one million people flock to the island to participate in celebrations, including the lively street festivals.
In Dubai, Sinulog will be held on February 16 at Ahdaaf Sports Club, in Al Quoz. The event was originally planned for February 9.
“It has been a roller-coaster ride for the United Cebuanos officers to push through with this year’s Sinulog sa UAE. We never gave up; from venue scouting, rejections, permits, documentation requirements, and the likes. But we take these as trials to make sure that our efforts and our love for the festival do not go to waste,” according to organiser United Cebuanos (UC) in a statement.
UC will be providing a complimentary shuttle bus service at Burjuman and Union Metro stations. Details of the bus timings will be announced on the group’s Facebook page.
The organiser said that “activities are lined-up for an exciting day in Dubai”, starting 8am onwards. Visitors can take part in a Zumba party in the morning and browse through the food bazaars in the venue. To set the mood, UC’s Dubai Bugle Corps will play the Sinulog beat.
The singing competition “Sinulog Idol” will also culminate in a grand finals on the day, with six finalists battling for the title.
At 1am, different delegations will comete in the Sinulog Dance Parade and Dance Interpretation categories, with each group’s muse to vie for the title of Sinulog Festival Queen 2018. Photography enthusiasts can also join a photo competition, dubbed as “Pitikan sa Sinulog”, during the day.
