DUBAI – While the Dubai Shopping Festival is ongoing in Dubai, a “Winter Clearance Sale” is ongoing in Sharjah, with retailers hoping that consumer spending will be spurred ahead of the implementation of a five percent Value Added Tax on January 1.

The big sale opened at Sharjah Expo Centre on Thursday and closes on Sunday, and offers up to 90 percent discount on consumer electronics, fashion, perfumes and apparels.
“Shoppers will benefit from the sale as the VAT is going to be introduced,” a sales executive at Al Rais Group said.
Shoes are one of the best sellers, with brands like Sketchers on 80 percent discount. Home appliances are also on sale from 50 percent to 90 percent. A Thomson washing machine is on sale at Grand Stores for Dh749 from its actual price of Dh1,499.
Televisions and home theatre systems are also hot items, with retailers like Plug n Point offering between 25 percent to 70 percent discounts. DAJ/Expat Media
